Xinjiang, the ridiculous defense of the indefensible

According to the communist regime, the repressed Muslims are very happy to be repressed. And the real victim is the government, deceptively insulted by those who defend human rights

Bitter Winter has been among the first to denounce the recent massive wave of repression unleashed against Muslims in the autonomous region of Xinjiang, especially but not solely Uyghurs, which brought more than one million of them (out of a million and a half of prisoners totally) in the nightmare called “re-education” camps. After Bitter Winter, other media began to realize the situation in face of, for example, the ridiculous move by Beijing that – as once more reported by Bitter Winter ‒, having for long time claimed to have closed the forced labor camps, has just admitted of having actually only replaced them with the very worst “re-education” camps, quickly approving a law that authorizes them retrospectively. Among the newspapers that have noticed this scourge are The Guardian in Great Britain, which seems to be taking the Uyghur question serioulsy, and Corriere della Sera in Italy, which on the other hand has managed to find only a slim space for the topic.

Now, though, the regime is trying to sell to the media the idea that those who are very happy with the “re-education” operated in those camps where Muslims are “de-programmed” through psycho-physical violence are the Muslims themselves. The Xinjiang Governor, Shohrat Zakir, said it blatantly during a long interview published on October 16 by Xinhua, the official government press agency. Since the excuse that the regime adopts to justify “de-programming” is the false idea that all Muslim Uyghurs are religious extremists, the line of defense adopted by the Chinese Communist Party insists on this point. Hypocritically calling the prisoners “trained people” because “deprogramming” is often referred to as “training,” perhaps professional, and using an alarming quasi-medical language, Zakir said: “Many trainees have said that they were previously affected by extremist thought  […] and now they have realized that life can be so colorful.” In the face of what happens in those camps, the words of Zakir are a cruel joke, but their real purpose is to defend an increasingly unsustainable system internationally. To convince the world, Zakir also refers to the words of an anonymous “trained”, a “repentant”: “I didn’t understand the country’s common language, nor did I know about the laws. I wouldn’t even have known that I had made mistakes. But the government didn’t give me up. It has actively saved and assisted me, giving me free food, accommodation and education. Now I have made great progress in many aspects. I will cherish this opportunity and become a person useful to the country and society.”  It seems to read the worst caricatures produced by the most gloomy totalitarianism of the twentieth century: brutally mistreated prisoners who thank their torturers.

An article, truly sarcastic, supporting Zakir, published by the Chinese Communist Party’s newspaper Global Times on October 16th, maintains then that the governor’s is “[…] a positive response to overwhelming Western media reports criticizing China’s policy on Xinjiang,” articles that, according to Shen Guiping, an alleged expert of religions of the Beijing’s Central Institute of Socialism, are made of “thin air” and insolent towards the regional government. In short, the Chinese government that violently tramples human rights every day is the victim and we all should repent.

Xinjiang, la ridicola difesa dell’indifendibile

Secondo il regime comunista, i musulmani repressi sono felicissimi di esserlo. E la vera vittima è il governo, proditoriamente insultato da chi difende i diritti umani

Bitter Winter è stato tra i primi a denunciare la recente massiccia ondata di repressione scatenata contro i musulmani della regione autonoma dello Xinjiang, soprattutto ma non solo uiguri, che ha portato più di un milione di loro (su un milione e mezzo totale di internati) in quell’incubo che sono i campi di “rieducazione”. Dopo Bitter Winter, altri mezzi di comunicazione hanno cominciato a rendersi conto della situazione a fronte per esempio della ridicola mossa di Pechino che ‒ sempre Bitter Winter ne ha riferito ‒, avendo a lungo affermato di avere chiuso i campi di lavoro forzato, ha appena semplicemente ammesso di averli in realtà solo sostituiti appunto con i ben peggiori campi di “rieducazione”, approvando in fretta una legge che li autorizza retrospettivamente. Tra i quotidiani che si sono accorti di questa piaga ci sono The Guardian in Gran Bretagna, che pare stia prendendo la questione uigura seriamente, e il Corriere della Sera in Italia, che invece per l’argomento riesce solo a trovare uno spazio smilzo.

Adesso, però il regime pretende di vendere ai media l’idea che della “rieducazione” nei campi dove i musulmani vengono “depogrammati” con la violenza psico-fisica a essere contentissimi siano proprio i musulmani. Il governatore dello Xinjiang, Shohrat Zakir, lo ha detto platealmente nel corso di una lunga intervista pubblicata il 16 ottobre dall’agenzia governativa ufficiale cinese Xinhua. Siccome la scusa che il regime adotta per giustificare la “deprogrammazione” è l’idea, falsa, che tutti gli uiguri musulmani siano automaticamente estremisti religiosi, la linea di difesa del Partito Comunista Cinese insiste su questo punto. Chiamando ipocritamente gli interanti «persone addestrate» poiché la “deprogrammazione” viene spesso definita «addestramento», magari professionale, e usando un allarmante linguaggio quasi medico, Zakir ha detto: «Molte delle persone addestrate hanno detto di essere state un tempo affette da pensiero estremista […] e invece ora si rendono conto che la vita può essere tanto gioiosa».

A fronte di quello che avviene nei campi, le parole di Zakir sono una beffa crudele, ma il loro vero scopo è quello di difendere un sistema sempre più insostenibile a livello internazionale. Per convincere il mondo, Zakir riferisce anche le parole di un anonimo “addestrato”, un “pentito”: «Non capivo il linguaggio comune e non conoscevo le leggi del Paese. Non sapevo nemmeno di avere sbagliato. Ma il governo non mi ha abbandonato. Mi ha positivamente salvato e assistito, dandomi cibo, alloggio ed educazione gratuiti. Adesso ho fatto progressi in molti ambiti. Coglierò questa opportunità e diventerò una persona utile al Paese e alla società». Sembra di leggere le peggiori caricature prodotte dal più tetro totalitarismo del secolo XX: prigionieri brutalmente maltrattati che ringraziano gli aguzzini.

Un articolo beffardo di appoggio a Zakir, pubblicato dal quotidiano del Partito Comunista Cinese Global Times sempre il 16 ottobre, sostiene quindi che quella del governatore è «[…] una risposta positiva all’enorme numero di articoli comparsi sui media occidentali per criticare la politica cinese nello Xinjiang», articoli che, secondo Shen Guiping, un presunto esperto di religioni dell’Istituto centrale per il socialismo di Pechino, sono fatti di «aria fritta» e insolenti verso il governo regionale. Insomma, il governo cinese che calpesta violentemente i diritti umani ogni giorno sarebbe la vittima e noi tutti dovremmo pentirci.
